China Pressure Sensor Industry Report: Market Demand Remains Strong, Market Size Grows to RMB 71.42 Billion
Pressure sensors, as a “Strong Foundation Program” core key component of China, play a key role in enhancing equipment intelligence and reliability amid the rapid development of the IoT industry and the wave of Industry 4.0 transformation and upgrading. In recent years, along with the upgrading of China's manufacturing industry and the surge in demand for high-precision sensors, pressure sensors have been increasingly widely used in core fields such as industrial production, automobile manufacturing, aerospace, and medical equipment.
Thanks to strong support from national policies and the powerful driving force of domestic and international markets, China's pressure sensor industry has built a complete industrial chain and occupies an important position in the global market. The industry scale continues to grow rapidly: from RMB 39.83 billion in 2019 to RMB 71.42 billion in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.39%. Looking ahead, as technological progress deepens and application scenarios continue to expand, the application scope of pressure sensors will further broaden, with huge market potential.
I. Development History of the Pressure Sensor Industry
The development of China's pressure sensor industry has gone through four periods: the embryonic period from 1900 to 1950, the development period from 1950 to 1990, the explosive period from 1990 to 2000, and the intelligent and integration period from 2000 to the present. The development of pressure sensors can be traced back to the early 20th century, when people began to explore using physical phenomena such as the piezoresistive effect and the piezoelectric effect to measure pressure. With the continuous development of semiconductor technology, semiconductor pressure sensors gradually became mainstream products; their advantages such as high accuracy, small size and light weight have led to their wide application in many fields.
In the mid-20th century, force-balance differential pressure sensors with slightly higher accuracy appeared; they had a small reacting force, a messy layout, and poor reliability, stability and shock resistance. In the mid-1970s, with the emergence of new processes, new materials and new technologies, especially the rapid development of electronic technology, displacement-type pressure sensors with small size and simple layout appeared. In the 1990s, science and technology developed rapidly; these sensors improved in measurement accuracy and gradually moved toward intelligence, and digital signal transmission became more conducive to data collection. To date, pressure sensors have developed into different types such as capacitive sensors, diffused silicon piezoresistive sensors, differential inductive sensors and ceramic capacitive sensors.
After entering the 21st century, with the rapid development of technologies such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, the pressure sensor industry has ushered in new development opportunities. Intelligence, high precision and integration have become new trends in the development of pressure sensors; at the same time, the integrated application of pressure sensors with other sensors has also been widely studied and applied.
II. Policies for the Pressure Sensor Industry
A pressure sensor is a type of sensor specially used to measure the pressure of a gas or liquid and convert it into an electrical signal. In recent years, the state has attached great importance to the development of the sensor industry and issued a series of supportive policies, which have not only promoted the progress of the entire sensor industry, but also brought significant development opportunities to the pressure sensor segment.
For example, in February 2024, the Ministry of Transport issued the Guiding Opinions on Doing a Good Job in the Demonstration of Creating Safe Century-Quality Projects and Promoting the High-Quality Development of Transport Infrastructure Construction, exploring the promotion of synchronous installation and use of monitoring equipment such as intelligent sensing sensors with projects, to improve the reliability and accuracy of safety protection monitoring data for transport infrastructure.
In December 2024, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology and four other departments issued the Implementation Rules for Several Policy Measures on Supporting the Development of the High-End Instrument and Equipment and Sensor Industry (Revised Edition), encouraging platform-based enterprises in the high-end instrument and equipment and sensor fields to carry out open-call tackling of key problems, prototype R&D, transformation of research results and industrialization, so as to solve enterprises' key core and “bottleneck” technical problems, and granting up to RMB 30 million in funding subsidies based on project investment.
III. Industrial Chain of the Pressure Sensor Industry
The pressure sensor is one of the most commonly used sensors in industrial practice. The upstream of the pressure sensor industrial chain is raw materials and chip design, among which raw materials include four major categories: semiconductor materials, metal materials, ceramic materials and organic materials. The midstream is the production and manufacturing of pressure sensors. The downstream is the application field: pressure sensors are widely used in various industrial automatic control environments, involving water conservancy and hydropower, railway transportation, intelligent buildings, automotive electronics, aerospace, military, petrochemicals, electric power, ships, machine tools, pipelines and many other industries.
As the foundational core of the modern electronics industry, semiconductor materials occupy an irreplaceable strategic position in the manufacture of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits thanks to their unique electrical properties. As the link with the highest technical threshold and the most complex sub-sectors in the semiconductor industrial chain, the semiconductor material system mainly covers two major categories: wafer manufacturing materials and packaging materials.
In recent years, with the rapid expansion of Chinese mainland wafer manufacturing capacity and the continuous upgrading of packaging and testing technology, the domestic semiconductor materials market has shown a strong growth trend. According to SEMI data, in 2024 Taiwan, China, with sales of US$20.09 billion, became the world's largest consumer region of semiconductor materials for the 15th consecutive year, mainly thanks to the huge material demand brought by wafer foundry giants such as TSMC producing the most advanced process chips for international tech companies such as Apple, AMD, Intel and Nvidia;
At the same time, the semiconductor materials market of the Chinese mainland has also maintained steady development, with full-year sales reaching US$13.458 billion, a year-on-year increase of 5.31%, demonstrating the increasingly improved supporting capacity and market vitality of China's semiconductor industrial chain. The continued growth of China's semiconductor material sales provides a solid material foundation for the innovative development of semiconductor devices such as pressure sensors.
One of the important application scenarios of pressure sensors is automotive electronics. In recent years, as the automobile industry has gradually become intelligent and connected, it has driven the rapid increase in penetration and performance of smart cockpit products, intelligent driving assistance products and intelligent connected products; the consumption upgrading of automobiles has accelerated the development process of the market size of China's automotive electronics industry. According to statistics, in 2024 the market size of China's automotive electronics industry grew from RMB 720 billion in 2019 to RMB 1,158.5 billion, with a CAGR of 9.98%. In the future, with the continued growth of automobile sales and consumers' higher pursuit of intelligent and connected vehicle functions, the market size of automotive electronics will expand steadily.
